Sales Tax Calculator 2026 (US, by State)

Pick a state to prefill its state sales tax rate, add your county/city rate if needed, and see the tax and tax-included total update live. A reverse calculator strips sales tax out of a tax-included price. Defaults to US dollars.

Forward: price → sales tax

$

The actual rate at a checkout address is the state rate plus county, city and special-district taxes. Those vary by ZIP code, so enter the exact local rate yourself rather than guessing — see FAQ for how to look it up.

Sales Tax FAQ (2026)

What is the state sales tax rate in each state for 2026?

State-level rates below are current as of July 1, 2026, per the Tax Foundation’s State and Local Sales Tax Rates, Midyear 2026. No state changed its base rate between January and July 2026.

Which states have no state sales tax (the NOMAD states)?

Five states — nicknamed NOMAD — levy no statewide sales tax: New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Delaware. In this calculator their state rate is prefilled as 0.00%.

  • Alaska is the exception on local tax: it has no state tax but allows boroughs and cities to impose local sales taxes (up to 7.85% in places; average about 1.82%). Enter the local rate in the “Local add-on rate” box.
  • Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon do not permit general local sales taxes, so total stays 0.00%.

Why do I need to enter a local rate? What is the “combined” rate?

Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own taxes on top of the state rate. For example, the state rate is 7.25% in California and 4.00% in Alabama, but combined rates can exceed 10% in some California and Alabama jurisdictions. The Tax Foundation reports average local layers of 5.46% in Alabama and around 1.78% in California, but these are population-weighted averages — the exact rate depends on the delivery address or ZIP code. The nationwide population-weighted average combined rate is 7.53%.

To get an exact figure, look up the address on the state department of revenue’s rate lookup (e.g., California CDTFA, Texas Comptroller) and type that local portion into the local-rate box. We deliberately do not fabricate ZIP-code-level rates.

What is economic nexus? Do I have to collect sales tax in other states?

After the Supreme Court’s 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair decision, a state can require out-of-state sellers to register and collect sales tax once their sales into that state cross an “economic nexus” threshold — with no physical presence required.

  • Most states: $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions per year (the original South Dakota standard).
  • A growing number of states have dropped the 200-transaction prong and use a $100,000 sales-only test (e.g., Colorado, Washington, Illinois from Jan 1, 2026, Indiana, North Carolina, Utah).
  • California and Texas use $500,000 (sales-only); New York uses $500,000 plus 100 transactions (both required).
  • Alabama and Mississippi use $250,000.

Thresholds are typically measured over the current or previous calendar year (or a rolling 12 months), and exactly which sales count — exempt sales, marketplace sales — differs by state. Marketplace facilitators (Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Shopify Marketplaces, etc.) usually collect tax on sales they facilitate, but those sales may still count toward your own threshold. Confirm each state’s current rule with its department of revenue.

How do I remove sales tax from a price that already includes it?

Use the reverse calculator above. Given a tax-included total T and rate r: pre-tax price = T ÷ (1 + r), and tax = T − pre-tax price. Example: $107.25 at 7.25% gives $100.00 pre-tax and $7.25 tax. Note this is not the same as multiplying the total by the rate — that would overstate the tax.

Are groceries, clothing or digital goods taxed?

Rates are only half the story — states also differ on what is taxable. Most states fully or partially exempt groceries (Illinois removed its 1% state tax on groceries from January 1, 2026, though many local taxes still apply); some exempt or discount clothing (e.g., New York’s clothing exemption); and states continue to expand taxation of digital goods and services in 2026. Hawaii’s 4.00% is a General Excise Tax on gross receipts with a very broad base, so it is not directly comparable to a retail sales tax. Always check product taxability for the state you sell into.
