How to use this calculator & what counts
Fill in the left column (top column on a phone) and every result updates instantly. Here is exactly what each number means:
- Selling price is the product price the customer pays — not including any shipping they pay separately.
- Amount collected per order = selling price + customer-paid shipping. Payment fees are calculated on this full amount, with the fixed $0.30 charged once per order.
- Product cost (COGS) is what one unit costs you (manufacturing, wholesale, packaging per unit). Shipping cost to customer is what you pay the carrier or fulfilment service.
- Shopify Payments charges only your plan's card rate. Choosing an external gateway (Stripe, PayPal, Authorize.net, etc.) adds Shopify's transaction fee of 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow) or 0.6% (Advanced) on top of the gateway's own charge; this calculator estimates that external processing cost using the same plan card rate plus the Shopify fee.
- Break-even price is the selling price at which product-level profit per order is exactly $0, holding COGS, shipping and fees constant. It does not include fixed monthly costs (subscription, apps, ads), which are covered separately by your order volume.
- Rates are US/USD figures for online orders. Amex/business cards, international cards, in-person POS sales and currency conversion may cost more.

Frequently asked questions
What does a Shopify subscription cost in 2026?
As of September 2026, US pay-monthly prices are Basic $27/mo, Grow $65/mo (previously called the “Shopify” plan) and Advanced $399/mo. Paying yearly brings them to $20, $49 and $299 per month. Shopify Plus starts from $2,300/mo. Source: shopify.com/pricing.
What are the Shopify Payments online credit card rates in 2026?
For US stores selling online: Basic 2.9% + $0.30, Grow 2.7% + $0.30 and Advanced 2.5% + $0.30 per order. In-person rates are lower (2.6% / 2.5% / 2.4% + $0.10). Premium (business/Amex) and international cards cost more. Sources: Shopify Payments fee documentation and Shopify's 2026 payment processing guide.
What extra fee do I pay with a third-party payment gateway?
Without Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee on every order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced (0.2% on Plus). It is charged on top of your external gateway's own processing fee, which is why most US sellers save money by using Shopify Payments.
Which Shopify plan has the cheapest credit card rate?
Advanced is cheapest per transaction at 2.5% + $0.30, versus 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic — a 0.4-point difference. But Advanced costs $399/mo against $27/mo for Basic, so the upgrade only pays off at higher volumes. At 100 orders/month of a $40 product, Basic leaves about $2,327 monthly net profit; switch the radio buttons above to compare plans with your own numbers.
How is Shopify profit margin calculated?
Net profit per order = amount collected − COGS − your shipping cost − payment fees. Margin % = net profit ÷ amount collected × 100. Monthly net profit also subtracts the subscription and other monthly costs; monthly margin divides that result by total monthly revenue collected.
Does Shopify Payments charge an additional transaction fee?
No. With Shopify Payments you pay only the card processing rate — there is no extra Shopify transaction fee. The 2% / 1% / 0.6% fee applies only when orders go through a third-party payment provider.
